Triple Swap Wednesday: Why Forex Charges 3 Days at Once

Your position sat open one more night and the swap hit three times harder. Why Wednesday carries three days of funding and what a full week really costs.

Triple Swap Wednesday: Why Forex Charges 3 Days at Once

You held a trade through the evening, checked the account on Thursday morning, and the overnight fee looked like it had been multiplied by three. It was. Nothing is broken, but nobody explained it either.

The Wednesday swap is not a surcharge: it is the weekend, charged early, because spot forex settles two business days after the trade.

Swap is rent on the currency you are borrowing

Swap (also called rollover or overnight funding: the fee or credit applied when a position stays open past the broker's daily cutoff) exists because you never really take delivery of the currency. Your broker keeps rolling your trade forward day after day, and each roll has a price.

IG explains it directly: "you are effectively being lent the money required to open your position." Lending costs interest, and holding the other currency earns interest. Swap is the difference between the two, plus the broker's cut.

That is why the same position can be a debit for a long trade and a credit for a short trade on the same pair. It also changes day to day, since OANDA notes its funding rates "may change on a daily basis".

The cutoff is one moment in the day

A position only pays if it is open at the broker's daily cutoff. OANDA treats a position as held overnight at 5 p.m. Eastern time, and FXCM uses 5pm EST for its rollover. IG states it as 10pm UK time.

Open and close a trade inside the same trading day and you never meet the swap at all. Hold it across the cutoff for one second and you pay for the whole day.

Twice a year, US and European clock changes land on different dates, so the gap between your local time and New York shifts for a few weeks. If your broker anchors the cutoff to New York, the moment in your local time moves with it. Check the broker's own rollover time on the platform instead of trusting the number you remember.

Spot forex settles two days later, and that is the whole reason

IG's page puts it in one line: "FX settles on a T+2 basis." T+2 (trade date plus two business days) means a trade you do today is due to be settled two business days from now.

Each night, your broker rolls that settlement date forward by one business day. Monday night moves it from Wednesday to Thursday. Tuesday night, Thursday to Friday. Wednesday night is the problem: Friday's settlement has to jump to Monday, because Saturday and Sunday are not business days.

OANDA describes it exactly that way. On a Wednesday at 5 p.m. the settlement date "needs to be pushed forward from Friday to Monday", so the funding rate is "typically three times the amount." IG says three-day funding is charged on a Wednesday for the same reason.

3 daysof funding charged in one go when a position rolls on Wednesday, per OANDA and IG
0 dayscharged on Saturday and Sunday, per OANDA: the weekend is settled inside Wednesday's charge

A normal week costs seven days of funding, not nine

Here is the part that gets lost. Triple swap sounds like an extra penalty on top of the weekend. It is not. OANDA states plainly that there are no financing costs or credits on Saturday or Sunday, so the weekend is paid for once, on Wednesday.

Count the cutoffs for a position opened Monday morning and held until the following Monday:

CutoffDays of funding chargedWhy
Monday 5pm1Settlement moves Wed to Thu
Tuesday 5pm1Thu to Fri
Wednesday 5pm3Fri to Mon, across the weekend
Thursday 5pm1Mon to Tue
Friday 5pm1Tue to Wed
Total7The same as seven calendar days

Seven nights of funding for seven calendar days. Wednesday is just where the weekend lands. You are not being charged twice.

What the number actually looks like

OANDA's own help page walks through a calculation with sample rates that it labels as not reflecting current swap rates. Using its figures: a position of 130,000 EUR/USD with a funding rate of -3.00% a year costs 130,000 x 3.00% x 1/365, about 10.68 EUR a day. On the short side, a +1.60% rate on the same size credits about 5.70 EUR a day, and OANDA's Wednesday example multiplies that to 17.10 EUR.

Run my arithmetic on the same sample long rate: the Wednesday charge is about 32 EUR, and a full seven-day week is about 75 EUR. Those are illustrations from sample rates, not a forecast of what your broker charges.

The formula itself is plain. IG gives it as size x (tom-next rate + admin fee). Tom-next ("tomorrow to next", the market swap rate for rolling a position by one day) is based on the interest rate differential between the two currencies. OANDA says its forex rates are a blend of liquidity providers' tom-next swap rates before its own fee.

It matters for swing trades and almost never for scalps

A trade that lives inside one session never sees swap. A swing trade that lives three to ten days sees it on every cutoff, and a position held for weeks pays it again and again.

My rule of thumb, an opinion and not a measured statistic: compare one day of swap to the spread you pay on entry. If a night of funding is a small fraction of the spread, it is noise. If it is a multiple of it, the carry is part of your edge or part of your drag, and you should know which before you click.

That is the same hidden-cost argument made in FX versus CFDs for EU retail traders: overnight financing is the cost most swing backtests forget. The simple fix is to log the broker's actual swap while you track your first 30 days on a demo account, because demo fills rarely model carry for you.

Triple swap is not the broker catching you out. It is the weekend arriving on Wednesday. Check the sign before you panic about the size.

— The Tradoki desk note

Swap is also a number that drains margin quietly

Funding is booked to your account as a cost. A long-held, high-leverage position with negative carry eats equity every cutoff, which lowers the distance to a stop-out. Margin call versus stop-out covers how that distance is calculated, and swap is one of the small leaks that shrink it.

One more disambiguation. Futures traders hear "rollover" too, but that means moving from the expiring contract to the next one, not a daily fee. Futures rollover dates and continuous contracts covers that, and it is a different mechanic.

● FAQ

Why is swap tripled on Wednesday in forex?
Spot forex settles two business days after the trade date. A position rolled on Wednesday moves its settlement from Friday to Monday, so the broker charges for three calendar days at once. Brokers like OANDA and IG both describe it this way, and it is the weekend being paid in advance, not a penalty.
Do I pay swap on Saturday and Sunday as well?
No. OANDA states there are no financing costs or credits on Saturday or Sunday. The weekend is already covered by the tripled Wednesday charge, so across a full Monday to Friday week you pay seven days of funding, the same as the calendar.
Can I avoid triple swap by closing on Thursday morning?
No, because the extra days are charged when the position rolls on Wednesday at the cutoff. The only way to avoid it is to be flat before that cutoff. Closing Thursday still leaves you with the Wednesday charge.
Is swap always a cost, or can it be a credit?
It can be either. Swap is built from the interest rate difference between the two currencies plus a broker fee, so the long and the short side get different rates, and one side may be a credit. The rate changes over time, so read the number your own platform shows today.
Is triple swap on Wednesday the same for gold and indices?
Not always. FXCM, for example, applies its 3x day on Wednesdays for gold and silver but on Fridays for its other CFD products. Check your broker's swap schedule for the exact instrument you trade.
